Heat lightning over Iowa
flashes on the horizon, pulses
into blackness, sparks again
over the rocketing train.
A first-time traveler huddles
between the power overhead
and on the tracks, zapped
by the immensity of the land,
the force that plays with kettle drums
and fire as the train clacks out
the miles from home.
